EPISODE 56: The Banewarrens, Act VII: The Dread One’s Path

We lost Zakaras forever in our battle against the Dread One. No known spell could restore his life. But I sincerely believe he would say that his sacrifice was worth it, if it meant saving the world from the ultimate evil of Eslathagos Malekith -- let all curse his name!

-- The Memoirs of Zenithian, Vol 3

Augustar 21-22

The Rosegate Company retreats back to Saharasahla’s bookshop through the teleportation device. Saharasahla tells them it is time to deactivate the teleporter and leave the Banewarrens for good. Too dangerous to leave it open, he says, now that they have the 751st page. Who knows who might come walking through. The company protests vehemently -- the only compromise they can reach is that Saharasahla will keep the teleporter active until midnight tomorrow. If they cannot use the teleporter, they will have to enter through the tunnel at the Old Manor -- which will force them to move through the spreading dread osyluth’s nest in the Outer Vaults.

They haul their loots to the Adventurers Square and earn a huge haul from the dark elf party’s exceptional gear. They even keep a few things for themselves. Early gets Itumar at the Bull & Bear to work all night on refitting the half-dragon drow crusader’s adamantine plate mail so it will be ready in the morning.

They return to their mansion, and are greeted by Early’s cheerful mutt... and find they have been burglarized! Seanus reports that a group of five -- a catman, three humans, and a gnome -- showed up this morning, walked right in, turned the place upside down, and left. Apparently they did not find what they were looking for, whatever it was, and they left empty-handed (except for the gnome, who stuffed his pockets full of coins). They interrogated Seanus about the whereabouts of the companions, but Seanus declined to reveal any info and roughed up a bit.

Vatex heads out on the town to try and find the identities of these burglars. None of his contacts produce any information. There is not even any word of the catman, who would presumably stand out given that the catfolk of Yaforashia are rarely seen, even in a cosmopolitan city like Elan.

Who are these burglars? One thing is for sure -- when the companions learn their identities, it will be bloody.

Seanus also announces that a package was delivered to the house earlier this morning. Is addressed to Early, from his Uncle Vegard - the man who'd given him the sword, Cryssaegrym.

That night various special orders arrive from the Dreaming Apothecary. Early visits the Temple of Ashe to remove the curse put on him by Yylonia. Early peruses the package from Vegard. It contains a letter from his uncle, and a bunde containing the surviving fragments of his father's journal.

After a good rest, the group eats a hearty bacon & eggs breakfast and returns to Saharasahla’s bookstore. They find that Zio, the magic-user who’d aided them early in the days of the Banewarrens quest, is present. He has heard they are going into the Baneheart, and he wants to come along.

They reject his offer to accompany them, but he insists. He explains that he is a necrotheologist, meaning he studies the deaths of gods. Some say the Dread One was a god, and Zio would like to see the site where he was destroyed. He says he can offer useful magic on their quest. They concede to let him come along, although they warn him of extreme danger to be faced.

Back in the Baneheart, the group visits Saggarintys, working on Tremoc Korin’s warding generator. He explains that if they can acquire the Sealing Rod AND he can get to the last warding generator in the broken seal area, they can seal the Banewarrens, and the dread osyluths can run wild for the rest of eternity. The difficult part of this is getting that last generator back online. The silver dragon hopes it is in decent shape so that it doesn’t take long to fix.

The group begins the long ascent to the top of the Spire. Emeris flies up level by level, setting up ropes and grappling hooks for the other to climb up. The group’s curiosity is piqued by more open Sealed Doors, but they are on a tight schedule.

Finally, they reach the top level, 2450 feet from the bottom. The ambient glow of the Baneheart seems bright here, and the vertigo-inducing height makes the group dizzy. To think, the dread fortress of Jabel Shammar is right above them!

There is only one opened Sealed Door at this level, and it looks busted, and the remnants of mark scorching blasta marks this level. Chunks of stone have been blasted out of the wall. A great battle took place here. Yaeshla reveals that she senses their close proximity to where the Staff of Shards was broken. Yaeshla says the battle between the eight great heroes and Darkstar began in Jabel Shammar and moved down to this place. The group finds the hilt of a holy sword that shattered in that battle.

There is also a twenty foot wide hole in the ceiling, that goes about 20 feet up into a larger chamber. They ignore it and follow the signs of battle past the half-open Sealed Door.

Beyond they find another battle site. Two doors have been blasted from their hinges. The other doors are blackened and scorched. The stone walls bear similar marks, and some are even blistered and melted in spots, as if heat by incredibly heat or acid. The room feels cold, and the air seems to vibrate.

There is a vault door that they examine. Dziga sends his shadow companion through and it is sucked away into another dimension. Dziga completely loses contact with it, but he senses it is alive somewhere. They open the door and see a hallway pulsing with swirling, violet energy. At the end of which is another vault door. Two dark elf corpses float in the hallway. The power of this energy is obvious, and there appears to be no way past without risking the same fate as the shadow companion or the dead drow.

In another room, the cold tension in the air is even stronger. Broken bits of equipment and armor lie on the floor, rusted and decayed. A skeleton juts out of the wouth wall, as if hurled into the wall and imbedded there. Broken stones lie at its feet. Black bloodstains mar the floor near the door. Yaeshla explains that this is where Zakaras Hedron, one of the eight heroes, was killed by the Dread One’s magic. The unique spell ensured that Zakaras could not be raised, like the other heroes who’d perished here.

The next room features walls that are a horrible reddish-black color, stained by some unknown cataclysm. The cold presence here resembles nothing the companions have ever felt before. It claws at their souls and numbs their whole body like the deepest winter. Sprawled against the collapsed wall opposite the door lies a tatter of black rags and a few charred bits of metal.

“This is it,” says Yaeshla. “This is where the Dread One died.”

The rags are all that remain of the Dread One’s form. When Vatex and Dziga search the rags, they stir up a swarm of wraiths, each just a fraction of the Dread One’s evil essence that lingered still after all these years. They scream and moan as they attack, mourning the death of Eslathagos Malekith and cursing all that is good and just.

Early stands guard by the door to protect Emeris and Zio in the room behind him. Three wraiths surge forth and attempt to grasp him with their life-sucking claws. Limbs of black vapor plunge through his corporeal armor and into his chest, drawing strength from his soul. He fights back with Cryssaegrym as they swirl about, taunting him.

Dziga clicks the heels of his boots together, becoming supernaturally quick, then draws the darkness around him, becoming invisible to the wraiths, and he begins to reposition. This leaves nine wraiths surrounding Vatex, and they unleash their assault. Their deathly cold undead grasp drains his life energy. His swords flash, tearing through their vaporous forms. His soul shrivels as more wraiths grasp at him. They are everywhere, reaching from all sides and even from above.

Early too is hard-pressed, even against just the three by the door. An incorporeal hand pierces his chest and touches his heart and for a moment he half expects to drop dead, but his hearty constitution and rage keeps him fighting. Zio steps forward, drawing a holy symbol created from a dozen other holy symbols, and he shouts words of power that cause two of the wraiths fighting Early to cower and flee to the corner, where they stare at the holy symbol with profound terror. Early’s sword sweeps across and cuts off the wraith’s head, and the undead dissipates.

Dziga emerges from shadow behind one of the wraiths assault Vatex, and activates his Deathstrike Bracers. A symbol flashes into existence on the wraith’s back, and Dziga drives his blades into the target. The symbol is pierced and imparts the effect of having its vital organs destroyed into the wraith’s incorporeal form, and it dies. Vatex hacks away at the swarming wraiths, but he cannot kill them quickly enough. Zio tries to turn more of the undead but fails. There are too many, and they are stronger than the average wraith!

Emeris rushes past Early and Zio, and unleashes a blast of destructive shadow that destroys most of the remaining wraiths. The group then dispatches the turned undead in the corner.

Victory is achieved, but Early and Vatex have lost much of their power to the wraiths’ touch of death. Fortunately, Zio has a scroll of restoration, and Emeris has a special ointment with a similar effect.

The battle had caused the rags to shift slightly, revealing a handle to some kind of rod or something. Early pulls it free, becoming cursed by the vile rags in the process. The platinum and gold dragon head of the scepter is familiar from a depiction of Saint Danar -- this is the Sealing Rod, at last.

The group searches through the rags, but there is no sign of the third piece of the Staff of Shards. Yaeshla is practically weeping. “It was supposed to be here!” she cries. “Someone must have taken it... it must be somewhere in the Banewarrens!”

But Vatex suggests that since they have the rod, they can leave. Sure, they may not be able to destroy the Banewarrens key without the completed staff, but so long as they can seal the place, they could probably ensure that the key is safe (maybe leaving it with Castle Shard or the Temple of Calethon). Early can feel Cryssaegrym’s anger in his heart. The sword... well, _likes_ Yaeshla for some reason, and seems to want the staff restored. Early knows that if he restores the Staff, Cryssaegrym will be so pleased it will fulfill the requirements of the second legacy ritual of the sword. Early says he will continue the quest for the staff alone, if he must.

Dziga, Vatex, and Emeris agree to help their friend. So they will continue upwards, hoping to find the final piece. Zio says he wants to stay behind and check out the site of the Dread One’s death, but they will not allow him to hang out alone.

Emeris flies into the hole and sets up climbing gear. Above, they find big room with a big iron panel in the floor with a black skull emblazoned on it. There is a door into a strange control room. Along the eastern wall are various dials and switches on a long low table. There are six cushioned chairs before the table, and before each chair on the table is a silver helmet that covers the wearer’s entire head and face. A red cord connects each helmet to a strange device hanging from the ceiling. The strange device is bejeweled with diamonds and rubies and set into a silver mesh. The mesh wraps around a hollow glass core that is shaped like a big cylinder. Hanging on the wall above the table is a framed picture depicting a 20-foot tall metal statue of bronze and steel.

Dziga looks more closely at the framed picture... and sees it is not a painting at all, but an actual live feed to a real place. Could that be what’s on the other side of the eastern wall?

With a bit of experimentation, they discover that the six helmets are meant to be used to control the huge statue outside -- this is the Doomwalker, which the Dread One had used to explore the treacherous area beyond. When the helmet is worn, the wearer can see through the mech’s “vision.” Each helmet controls a different part of the mech -- the head, the arms, the legs, and the chest. Various weapon systems are equipped in this construct, including flame throwers, spear launchers, acid jets, a poison gas emitter, a grappling claw, and a smashing hammer fist.

Although there are only five of them, the head-user can also control another part of the body, giving them 99% effective control over its systems. They can also teleport items from the grappling claw into the control room. Crazy technology! everyone thinks. The group wishes they could bring this thing with them back home!

They turn the Doomwalker around, and beyond two massive doors is a long pathway, nearly 100 feet wide and tall. Only in a few places is the bare stone fllor visible here, as fungi grows as thick as a forest, including mushrooms and puffballs and other growths. There is a prodigious amount of a strange, purplish fungus and that to writhe and twitch. Spores float through the air. The path is filled with strange ambient light, and extends farther than should be physically possible -- at least a quarter-mile, probably more. On a few places in on the walls and ceiling, the stone seems almost transparent, revealing a void of nothingness beyond. This place should extend beyond the spire, but instead it seems to extend into some kind of planar oblivion -- what the heck is this place? Obviously it is inhospitable, hence the need for the Doomwalker. What was the Dread One trying to do here?

The companions guide their lumbering giant mech down the path. Each step into a mass of fungus unleashes a cloud of spores. Various meters and gauges respond, but they use weird symbols and notation. Vatex uses his comprehend languages spell, discovering that they measure toxicity and other dangers.

About a quarter-mile down the path, they come across a 50-ft across shelf that hosts a number of huge, purplish cocoons.

Vatex fires one of the spear launchers and pierces the thing, and a wyvern-like creature begins to break out. Five of the other cocoons begin to open, containing more fungoid-wyverns. Their bodies are covered in weird growth and fungi. The group fires more volleys of spears and slays the first wyvern before it can get free.

The other five soar forward in a rage, as if to guard something farther down the path. The doomwalker lumbers forward to get the enemies in the range of more weapon systems. Dziga pulls a switch and unleashes a massive cone of flame that engulfs three of the wyverns. Like flaming comets they continue their advance, trying to strike the Doomwalker with their tails, claws, and bites. The Doomwalker’s adamantine-enforced body is nearly impervious to their attacks and it suffers only a few scratches. Vatex manipulates the left arm and grabs one of the wyverns in its claw. Emeris then activates the right hand and smashes the held wyvern twice. Its ribcage collapses and a second blow crushes its inner organs. It drops limp to the ground.

Early, in the chest seat, fires a line of acid. It blasts through a wyvern at point blank range, and extends to dissolves the left wing of another wyvern as its swoops in from above. Unable to fly, it crashes into the ground and breaks its neck on impact, releasing a big cloud of spores. Vatex manipulates the claw-arm and crushes the life out of another wyvern. The wyverns keep attacking desperately, but mostly just leave scratches on the mighty mech. Another strike of the right arm and a wyvern’s head is crushed. Another grasp of the claw arm and the last wyvern is choked to death.

Such power! The Doomwalker is incredible. When the flamethrower is ready to fire again, Dziga unleashes it upon the other cocoons, which are all small and apparently at an earlier stage of development. Then the Doomwalker strides through the flames, continuing along the Dread One’s Path.

After a few more minutes of walking, about 200 away from them they can see the end of the path. There they see a small three storey stone house. The walls are straight and finished with masonry-cut blocks. Above the house and to the right floats a large, charcoal black egg. The lusterless and dead-looking egg floats on its end. It is about 40 feet tall and half that width at its broad base. Carved into this huge egg is what appears to be an angelic figure with two pairs of wings and a huge sword.

The companions move the Doomwalker closer, but after advancing about 50 feet, a bald, ebony skinned angel with four wings of blood-red feathers, emerges from the house’s front door. He is about 13 feet tall. He yawns and rubs his eyes, as if he just awoke from a deep slumber.

The Maleficite!!!

When he sees the mech advancing, he shouts, “Who the hell is operating the Doomwalker? I should have destroyed that piece of trash a long time ago.” He reaches out his hand and conjures up a massive, black-bladed greatsword, and prepares to attack.

Suddenly, a vortex of swirling black energy opens near the ceiling. The Dread One’s Path trembles. Lights and gauges flash in the control room, indicating tremendous magic is active. At first they think this is the Maleficite’s doing, but when they regard his expression they see only surprise and confusion.

What the hell is happening?

Then, flying out of the vortex like a horror from an adventurer’s nightmare, is a huge adult red dragon -- yet some of its dull red scales are darkened with streaks of blackness. Demonic horns jut out around the dragon’s neck frills. . Detailed analytics come up in the Doomwalker’s HUD with dragon info. This is no ordinary dragon -- it is a half-fiend. And it wears a Quaan bone ring.

“Now you face the strongest of the Pactlords of the Quaan... I AM FERENDIS!!!” the dragon lets out a roar. A blast of feedback carries through the silver helmets into the control room, hurting the ears of the companions.

Ferendis... the Pactlords' “trump card”... is a DRAGON!

Riding on the dragon’s back is a Pactlord bugbear fighter, who wields a magic longbow. “I am Sarth!” he declares.

Ferendis circles above the Maleficite and the Doomwalker, and shouts to the angel, “Where is the Grail, angel?”

Maleficite responds with both anger and annoyance, “What are you talking about?”

“We’ve used a Wish spell to be teleported to _the most powerful artifact in the Banewarrens_. So the Black Grail must be close -- where is it?”

The Maleficite bursts out into hysterical laughter. “Hahaha, you fools! The Black Grail is but a shadow compared to the total eclipse of... THE ANTITHESIS STONE!” he gestures to the massive floating black egg.

“Enough of your elaborate metaphors, angel! You will take us to the Grail, or we will crush you!”

“I have outlasted even my master, Eslathagos Malekith... The Dread One, Darkstar,” the Maleficite replies with a low growl. “You will learn to tremble before my awesome power!”

“So be it,” Ferendis declares. “Then I will be forced to destroy you along with the humanoids! Now--”

“But Ferendis, wait!” Sarth interrupts, choking on the omnipresent spore clouds. “Where are our companions? They should have arrived with us.”

Companions? the Rosegate Company shares the same thought. Uh oh...

Suddenly they hear noise outside the Doomwalker control room. Emeris pulls off his silver helmet and runs to the door, opening it halfway and looking outside. More Pactlords!

There are two familiar Pactlords in the group -- Chast the athach, and Vo-Nul the phase spider. They were both involved with the kidnapping of Emeris back in the Outer Vaults two weeks ago. They are joined by the harpy archer, AZZ, and the lizardwoman cleric of Remora named Skyrryt.

“DIE HUMANOIDS!” yells Azz at the sight of Emeris in the doorway.

Emeris explains the situation. If they abandon the Doomwalker controls to fight against the Pactlords’ attack squad, it will probably be destroyed. However, they cannot ignore the other Pactlords outside the control room. Everything is at stake!

Vatex, Dziga, and Zio remain at the Doomwalker controls, while Early takes off the chest-operating helmet and joins Emeris by the door. The warblade and the shadowcaster will defend the control room -- the rogue, the ranger, and the necrotheologist will try to operate the Doomwalker themselves and fight against the corrupted angel and the half-fiend dragon.

S’kyrryt fingers her wooden wand and Emeris is becomes frozen in place. Azz fires a volley of arrows at Emeris but only one breaks through the protective shield of shadows. Early rushes out the door to protect the shadowcaster, and is in turn hit by the wand and Chast begins to advance and the phase spider disappears in the ethereal plane to make a sneak attack. He growls as the effect attacks his mind and he resists.

oomwalker.jpgDziga switches his controls to the left leg, aiming the left hip mounted spear launcher at Ferendis, who begins turning widely to make a strafing run. Vatex and Zio lock in their launchers as well and the three of them fire a volley. Two of the spears pierce Ferendis’ armor-like scales but the dragon seems to ignore the huge spikes jutting from its flank.

The Maleficite launches a scorching column of celestial fire at the Doomwalker, nearly knocking it to the ground. Damage reading fill the HUD and the control room fills with red and yellow lights from the glass cylinder. The angel then conjures up a ring of swirling blades, made of pure force, trapping the Doomwalker within.

The companions make the Doomwalker leap through a gap in the swirling ring of blades that appears momentarily, but the mech is hacked up badly in the process. The three drivers try to get the mech to its feet after clearing the spinning blades, while Sarth the bugbear fires arrows flame arrows that break against the mech. Ferendis completes his arc, inhales deeply, and unleashes a devastating inferno from its gullet. Dragon fire engulfs the Doomwalker. Panels in the control room burst with sparks. Data scrolls down in the HUD reporting damage to the mech, which is clearly not invulnerable. The force of the blasting flames knocks the Doomwalker back several steps. Vatex chokes on the smoke that fills the control room as systems overload and regains control of the left arm claw. He reaches up at Ferendis -- the clumsy flier cannot pull up quickly enough to get out of reach -- and grabs the dragon around its hind leg, pulling him into a grapple.

Early rushes out of the control room to engage Chast. The aberrant giant, carrying two giant morningstars, reaches with its third hand into a pouch at its waist, and pulls out a big rock which is hurled at the warblade. It smashes into him, breaking into a hundred pieces and knocking the warblade to the ground. Early wipes blood away from his lips and gets back to his feet, continuing his charge.

Emeris draws upon his deepest reserves of willpower and breaks free of the lizard cleric’s wand’s enchantment. He reaches into his bag and pulls out the bottle containing the shadow genie Balin-Ra. He pulls out the stopper and the khayal emerges with a plume of black smoke, celebrating that this is the third and final time it will have to serve the owner of the bottle. Emeris commands Balin-Ra to attack the harpy, who fires another array of arrows at the warblade.

The warblade knocks aside a few arrows and accepts hits from the others. The 18 foot tall athach swings a morningstar at Early as he closes in -- Early deflects the attack with Cryssaegrym and roars. The Vajra fills his mind and he leaps upon the monster, hacking with the fury of a beast.

Ferendis twists and fights violently against the Doomwalker’s grasp. Great is the strength of the dragon, but Vatex, controlling the left arm, reallocates power away from the right leg and into the claw... just enough power to maintain the grip. Dziga takes control of the right arm and punches Ferendis repeatedly in the side. Bones snap and internal bleeding spreads quickly. The fiendish dragon coughs up blood. It relents against trying to break free and tries to rip the Doomwalker apart. Its jaws close around the head and try to rip it off, but to no avail. Claws and wings slash at the mech, with hind legs kicking violently but only scraping against the mech’s body. The mighty Doomwalker suffers minimal damage. The mech continues pounding on the dragon.

Sarth stands up and runs along the long neck of Ferendis to stand on the dragon’s head. Balancing carefully as the two giants wrestle, Sarth pulls out his big magic axe and begins hacking at the Doomwalker’s head. He cuts off an antenna before he is tossed to the ground in the violent struggle.

Early fights valiantly against the onslaught of Chast. The athach kicks and swings his morning stars, and uses his free hand to try and flatten the warblade. Early dodges the first swing of the morningstar but his ferocity has come at the expense of his defense, and the swinging fist smashes across his head. He spins and lands on his feet, only to be kicked in the gut, doubling him over. The second morningstar crashes down on his left leg, and were he not wearing the adamanatine armor, he is sure his the bones of his leg would be shattered. He rolls to the side and comes up in a crouch, firing his pistol into the stomach of the monster then swinging Cryssaegrym wildly. Pactlord blood spills across the ground.

Balin-Ra draws his scimitar and flies across the room. He slashes at the harpy Azz, who drops his bow and pulls his sword from its sheath, hovering in a defensive stance. The two exchange blows but it is obvious that the harpy is more of an acher than a swordsman. Azz strikes a quick blow then dives towards the ground to grab his bow. Balin-Ra pursues and flies through a storm of arrows from the fleeing harpy. The genie looks like a porcupine as it closes on Azz and cuts two more deep wounds.

Vo-Nul exits the ethereal plane behind Early as Chast falls to his knees as Cryssaegrym cuts the muscles in his legs. The phase spider flanks him and sinks poisonous fangs into his hindquarters. The warblade feels poison spread through his blood, and he makes a retaliatory slash against the beast, but the monster has retreated to the ethereal plane already. Chast is dying, but Skyrryt rushes to his side and channels healing power into his body. The most serious wounds close and the three-armed athach renews his assault.

The Maleficite watches with amusement as the mech and the dragon fighting desperately against one another. He flies up to stand on the roof of the house and evokes another blast of celestial fire that hits both combatants and Sarth. He then conjures up another ring of spinning force blades -- creating a sort of battle arena around Ferendis and the mech! Ferendis pushes the Doomwalker away with his hind legs, and breathes another blast of fire over the mech. More panels explode as they overload in the control room. Lights flash on various instruments, and smoke fills the room. Ferendis roars with a premature sense of victory as the Doomwalkers systems briefly fail... seconds before emergency backup systems kick in and the fight continues.

The metal body of the Doomwalker glows from the intense heat of dragon flames, and keeps punching Ferendis. Dziga pulls the switch on the flamethrower but the dragon is competely immune to the intense fire. Vatex holds down the switch for the claw, and manipulates the controls to aim the spear launcher at the same time. He fires it at point blank range. The spear embeds in the dragon’s crotch, yielding a dragonic roar of rage and pain.

The dragon gets its tail wrapped around the Doomwalker’s legs, pulling it down, but the mech maintains its grip. At this moment, the Maleficite uses one of his mightiest powers and generates an earthquake centered upon the grappling dragon and construct. Huge fissures appear in the stone floor, revealing the dark void beyond. The rocking of the Dread One’s Path pulls the grappling combatants apart as stone fall from the ceiling around them. The Doomwalker is battered and smashed, and Ferendis’ left claw is crushed beneath a particularly large falling block. As a fissure opens beneath the Doomwalker, Dziga and Zio coordinate their controls and the mech jumps clear at the last moment from falling into the void of no return.

Ferendis recovers quickly as the earthquake subsides, and takes this chance to fly away, but the Doomwalker pilots are quick to recover as well. The clawed left hand strikes and grabs the dragon by its back leg as it attempts to flee, pulling it back down and into the mech’s grasp. Dziga uses the right arm to smash into the dragon’s skull, breaking off one of its horns. Blood gushes from between the broken scales around its head.

Sarth climbs out of one of the fissures generated by the earthquake and begins hacking at the Doomwalker’s legs as if he was a lumberjack and the mech was a tree. Zio’s HUD fills with damage reports. Sarth’s axe does only a little damage with each strike, but if left unattended, it is very possible that the persistent, fearless bugbear could cut off the mech’s leg.

Dziga keeps operating the right arm of the mech, pounding on the dragon’s head again and again. Claws and teeth slash at the Doomwalker, tearing away chunks of metal plating and tearing apart the copper wiring underneath, but the blows keep coming. Eventually it cannot muster the strength to fight any longer. Ferendis’ skull caves in with a final, bloody crunch, and Vatex tosses the broken body to the ground with the left arm. Vatex then scoops up the bugbear in the left hand, but Vatex slightly miscalculates the pressure and the bugbear is crushed to death instantly. Oh well, now it is time to deal with the Maleficite -- if that is possible, since the Doomwalker is severely damaged and the angel has suffered no damage at this point.

Early parries one swinging morningstar but the second clips him on the shoulder, sending him spinning through the air. He rolls to the side as an athach foot comes down to stomp his skull, and with a swing of his sword he severs three of the athach’s toes. An Elder Mountain Hammer maneuver sends Chast stumbling back. Early dodges the last of the flailing monster’s attacks and strikes the final blow -- a Soaring Raptor Strike that takes off the monster’s head.

Skyrryt runs to avoid the giant monster as it crashes to the ground. Balin-Ra cuts again and again at Azz, drawing his attention so that Emeris can hit him with a perfectly aimed blast of umbral energy. Azz’s head explodes like a melon as a ray of dark energy blasts through his brain.

The Maleficite scowls as the Doomwalker tosses aside the battered corpse of Ferendis. The Doomwalker jumps through the blade barrier ring and fires spears and poison gas at the angel as it lands on the other side. The Maleficite is hit with one spear but pulls it free with a gout of blood. Immediately the wound begins to heal. It takes flight to avoid the poison gas and flies high past the Doomwalker, speeding down the path. As it does, he hurls another blast of divine fire. The Doomwalker survives but begins emitting smoke and sparks flare around various joints.

Dziga and Vatex and Zio direct the mech after the fleeing angel, but when the angel puts enough distance between them, they realize it was not trying to run away -- it was merely getting enough distance to use another power. An aura of dark energy flares around the Maleficite, and both his height and muscular build begin to expand. Soon he is twice his former size, standing nearly 25 feet tall -- even taller than the Doomwalker!

Vo-Nul continues to disappear into the ethereal and re-appear, making surprise attacks against Early who chases the Pactlord cleric throughout the room. Poison burns in the warblade’s system, but he suppresses its effects with amazing fortitude. Skyrryt keeps firing his wand to try and stop Early, but the warblade resists each paralyzing ray that hits him. Beams of shadow magic lance from Emeris’ hands, knocking the cleric to the ground. The lizardwoman raises her mace feebly in defense as Early descends upon her. The warblade cuts her arm off at the elbow, and she scrambles desperately to safety. Balin-Ra cuts her off and slashes at her, while Emeris fires a fatal ray of energy that strikes her chest.

The Doomwalker charges down the path towards the enlarged Maleficite. The angel takes three steps then leaps into the air, spreading its wings to soar down the path with amazing speed. The rush of air scatters bursts of fungal spores behind him. His black sword is raised as he draws closer ot the charging mech, and he swings, cleaving into the the neck of the mech. Dziga is jolted through the silver helmet on impact, and his control panel goes completely dark. He slams it with his fist and it reactivates thankfully. “Vatex, grab him!” he yells as he takes control of the right arm.

Zio throws a lever and the Doomwalker lunges forward and Vatex extends the claw. The Maleficite swings his blade and cuts a chunk from the Doomwalker’s hip, but the mech’s momentum continues forward and the angel is clasped in the powerful claw. Dziga pounds the angel with the other arm as fast as he can. The angel’s left arm which holds the sword snaps, and his skull cracks and his ribs break under the pressure. Dziga then shifts control the poison gas emitter, and a green cloud spreads around the combatants. The Maleficite hacks up blood but keeps fighting despite the lack of air and despite its broken arm. With his free hand he punches the Doomwalker with such force the outer plates crack and interior components are crushed. Even as the Maleficite suffers horrible wounds, his incredible celestial endurance and regenerative abilities make fighting him a losing proposition, even with the Doomwalker’s superior raw strength. If they cannot kill him quickly enough, eventually he will break get lucky and break free. The biggest risk would be if he tried to break through the wall to the control room, unleashing the deadly spores upon them. The Maleficite continues pounding on the Doomwalker, this time hitting its head and causing severe damage to the mech’s systems.

Only one enemy remains to deal with the control room -- an enemy that stalks its prey from the ethereal plane, and appears to strike the victim flat-footed with poisonous fangs. Early begins the Death from Above maneuver, but leaves the final step uncompleted. Then he waits. He knows the spider will appear, and he waits. His muscles are tense and ready to snap. When Vo-Nul appears, the spider’s fangs flash and Early completes his maneuver in a fraction of a second. The final burst of Vajra rushes through him and he releases it through his blade. He launches into the air and thrusts the tip of the katana into Vo-Nul’s cluster of eyes as it lunges to strike. The spider collapses, with a blood-choked curse to humanoids as it dies.

With the Pactlords dead outside the control room, Emeris frees Balin-Ra from his indentured servitude, and the genie vanishes into the Plane of Shadow with a smile. He and Early then replace the silver helmets to join the fight against the angel.

With the Doomwalker nearly fully operational now with five pilots, the battle is tilted against the dark angel servant of the Dread One. The Maleficite keeps slamming the head of the Doomwalker, but now the combined companions are able to inflict punishment much faster than the Maleficite can heal and inflict damage. Emeris triggers the poison gas cloud and the self-repair protocols, Dziga fires the flamethrower. The angel gasps for air as blood streams from his mouth and nose, and the fire burns him badly despite his celestial resistances. Vatex and Zio keep firing the spear launchers which sink deep at such close range. Early, operating the right arm, smashes the angel again and again.

Even as the control room goes up in smoke around them and the Doomwalker reaches critical alert, the companions continue their assault. The Maleficite’s blows grow weaker and weaker, and eventually cease altogether. The blood-splattered Doomwalker continues pounding the angel’s body, reducing it to a bloody paste. Even then they can see it regenerating. It is possible they have no means to truly kill the angel, but they have bought themselves time.

The Doomwalker stomps over to the small house and pulls off the roof. Inside is the Maleficite’s pile of random treasures -- gold and platinum coins of an ancient minting; a splendid silver and gold crown; a weird magical nunchuku; and most importantly... the final piece of the Staff of Shards.

As for the Antithesis Stone, the group doesn't want anything to do with it. It seems reasonable to assume that this thing turned Bastion the angel friend of Danar into the Maleficite. Perhaps it was even the thing that corrupted Danar himself. They joke about tossing Emeris into it, and possibly making him into a nice morally righteous fellow, and they have a laugh.

Dziga presses a switch and the treasures in the hand of the Doomwalker appear within the control room. The party scoops them up. When touched to the other two pieces of Yaeshla, final piece is fused on and the Staff is complete. Yaeshla is overcome with joy, but she somberly says that it is not over -- “I must be used against the Hand of Danar.” Indeed, but for now Vatex, Dziga, Emeris and Early must rejoin Saggarintys and seal the Banewarrens for good.

Before it is too late!

EPISODE 55: The Banewarrens, Act V: Heart of Banes III - The Elite Fighting Force of Gorgoth-lol

If a skilled telepath were to look upon an individual mind from an elevated plane of consciousness, several distinct “shadows” would begin appearing. These are sometimes called ‘mind shadows’. Within these shadows there exists a para-spiritual dimension that is coexistent with all things, and a wind called “the Vajra” flows through it. In theory, one’s mind shadows could become infinitely long and harness an infinite amount of Vajra’s power...

-- “An Inquiry into the Powers of Martial Initiates” 2nd edition
De Garma of Dezolis

Augustar 21, 754 YE

They were possibly the most elite fighting force the Underdark had ever seen. They would now face their greatest challenge -- the Rosegate Company!

Six months ago, the High Priestesses of the drow House Vrama were visited by a powerful outsider servant from the Spider Goddess’ Abyssal realm -- the Envoy of Gorgoth-lol. She revealed that House Vrama was chosen to carry out an unholy mission in the name of the Spider Queen -- to claim three treasures from the surface world: the Chronoweb, the Black Grail, and the Godspike.

To fulfill this mission, the Envoy assembled the finest force House Vrama could muster.

> The priestess Yylonia, master of the Spider Queen’s Summoning and Trickery domains.
> Gir Jagi, a brutal knife-fighter from the Scorpion’s Grasp Academy.
> A formidable drider cleric named Xola.
> Zelkeeph and Moqtuar, fighter-magi who had been ‘blessed’ by “kissing the Fangs of Gorgoth-lol in the Ceremony of Corruption”
> Shindura Vrama Dracos, a half-green-dragon half-drow crusader of Gorgoth-lol.
> Kaltaren, a drow vampire psion
> A fiendish dragonne named Valtrex
> A clan known as the Stings of Gorgoth-lol, consisting of 21 drow ninjas highly skilled in the Vajra Shadow Arts.
> 12 elite Underdark scouts, a unit called the Dark Snipers

First, they penetrated the haunted ruins of the dwarven kingdom of Shadowhearth, which lies beneath the City of Elan, and claimed the Chronoweb -- an ancient drow artifact lost during the Dark Elf Wars. They then proceeded to breach the Banewarrens through the Pactlord’s umber hulk tunnel, and seek the Black Grail from Tremoc Korin. Next, there was only the Godspike -- which was anticipated to be the easiest item to acquire. But there was one thing they did not count on when exiting the Banewarrens with the Black Grail in hand -- the Rosegate Company.

(Note that by this point, the drow had already once encountered the Silver King, Saggarintys, while the dragon was repairing the Warding Generators in the Inner and Outer Vaults. Moqtuar had been killed, as well as many ninjas and scouts. Other scouts and ninjas had been killed by the Master of Chains and his clan of gray ogres, and another had lost his life when he got sucked into the Shadowstar Amulet and killed by the demon Alluzar. Much earlier, back in Shadowhearth, the psion Kaltaren was killed by a trap that emitted a blast of positive energy that reduced him to dust. Other scouts and ninjas had been killed by Shadowhearth’s ancient mechanical guardians. The expedition had only two scouts and 4 ninjas with them at present to accompany the more powerful drow. Eight more ninjas and a scout stood by in the cavern beneath the umber hulk tunnel, guarding the entrance to the Banewarrens.)

As the group gathers by the door to the Master of Chains’ chamber, the light from Vatex’s flaming sword is spotted through the door and the drow take defensive positions. The Envoy makes an unappealing offer -- since the drow have what they want and wish to leave, they say that if the Rosegate Company sacrifices one of their number to the Spider Queen, the others can leave unmolested. The offer is, naturally, refused. This rejection is met with a series of impressive sounding boasts from the dark elves, emphasizing how powerful they are.

Does the Rosegate Company stand a chance?

The companions decide to hit the drow hard and fast. The gather quickly around Emeris who channels shadow power and draws them all into the darkness. They feel and strange pulling sensation, and suddenly appear in the midst of the drow force. With his companions in the heart of their enemies’ formation, Emeris takes to the air.

Early feels the power of the Vajra flow through Shindura, whose aura of power swirls around her adamantine-armored figure. He rushes to face her, crashing the keen blade of Cyssaegrym against her shield. The force of the blow sends her back a few steps, and her eyes go wide from Early’s ferocity. Early channels the power from the martial script he’d read previously, unleashing a savage blow. The blade sweeps across in an arc, catching the smallest gap between the adamantine plates, but cuts four lines -- like the claw of a bear -- into the half-dragon crusader. Blood sprays across the stone floor.

A ninja disappears then reappears to flank Early, but the warblade focuses his attention on the half-dragon. Shindura strikes back at him, using her powers to redirect some of the damage back towards the warblade. Her longsword channels the power of Gorgoth-lol and as her blade cuts him, she heals a a portion of the wound he’d inflicted. But Early unleashes another Rabid Bear Strike, and so devastating is the blow that the powerful crusader of the Spider Queen drops dead.

The drow look on in shock as their mighty warrior is felled so quickly. However, Shindura had put a baneful effect upon the group earlier that day -- the Blood Ritual of Gorgoth-lol. Upon her death, the attacks of the remaining drow became deadlier!

Another ninja vanishes completely, then reappears to flank early with the other ninja. Early discovers that they too use the Vajra -- they strike with maneuvers that Early recognizes as a variation of the Rabid Bear Strike. The ninjas draw upon their ki pool and intermittently turn invisible, frustrating the warblade’s attempts to strike back. The slender ninjas swords plunge into his flesh but he fights on in a fury.

Vatex and Dziga, back to back, consider the enemies surrounding them. Zelkeeph the fighter-mage boasts about how the Ceremony of Corruption made him “much more than just a normal drow,” and he draws upon his most powerful spell and fires it at Vatex. The purple light of the Rudeus of Vazdah is suppressed as shadow deepen and gather around him, and then arc towards Vatex to ensnare him. The elf puts his blades before him and deflects the spell, then lunges forward -- his two blades stab into the guts of the fighter. The blessed crystal of Diem Wing cuts easily through the armor-like flesh of the drow, and he chokes up blood as the Rudeus strikes a second blow. Zelkeeph begins to flee.

The other two ninjas are closing in, but the knife-fighter Gir Jagi makes the next move. He advances towards Dziga, stabbing him in the stomach with an enchanted blade that leaves his abdomen withered and dessicated. Gir Jagi’s free hand snaps out and grabs the rogue around the neck, grappling him and stabbing him repeatedly in the back. The pain is excruciating, and Dziga is not strong enough to overpower the vicious fighter. Gir Jagy feels Dziga relax in his grasp. “Giving up already, eh?” he mocks. But then Dziga vanishes from his grasp, much to his surprise, and reappears 25 feet away to cut off Zelkeeph’s retreat. A well-placed blow from Asura ends the fighter-mage’s life and he crumples to the ground, immediately dead.

As the drider cleric, currently standing on the vertical surface of the Baneheart’s wall, begins powering up with divine magic, Yylonia, the priestess, draws a scroll from an ebony tube, and the sigils flare with purple flame as she speaks the words of power in a booming voice. The spell is completed, and the scroll fades to dust -- and appearing to her summons in a Handmaiden of Gorgoth-lol -- a yochlol, a demon that looks like a melted column of wax with one eye and a eight tentacles. This demon appears right behind Dziga.

The Envoy of Gorgoth-lol’s expressionless face carefully watches Emeris, and remarks that his rare shadowcaster powers are no match for the power of the Spider Queen. She draws upon a powerful spell that will utterly destroy Emeris’ mind and strip him of his magic. A black bolt of energy fires from her hands, and is consumes Emeris as he flies through the air. Emeris his mind under attack like he’s never felt before -- miraculously, he resists the assault, but only with great mental strain, much to the surprise of the Envoy.

The two dark snipers on the south part of the cross bridge begin firing to provide ranged support. They try to take down the flying Emeris but the web of shadows, hard as steel, protects him. Emeris turns and unleashes a blast of shadow power at them and the flying Valtrex. The fiendish dragonne, an awkward flier, slowly changes course and flies over Emeris, snapping a bite at him and tearing away from flesh from his shoulder.

Early cuts down one of the ninjas, but another one of the tricky opponents takes its place. The fourth ninja moves to support Gir Jagi as he taunts Vatex and Dziga, standing before them in a seemingly careless stance.

Vatex makes his move, his blades flashing in dizzying patterns -- Gir Jagy simply accepts the hits and counterattacks each one. The knifefighter’s flesh is in ribbons as he slashes the elf across the chest and grabs onto him, grappling him. The ninja takes advantage of the occupied elf’s situation and hits him with a Deadly Spider Strike and the slender blade pierces his guts. Gir Jagi whispers in Vatex’s ear, “You’re dead, elf!” but then he feels Dziga’s hand grab onto his shoulder -- and Asura is thrust into the base of his skull.

Vatex pulls free of the dead knifefighter’s grasp but is hit with a powerful spell fired at him from the Envoy. It is likely that only his elven heritage kept him safe from the mind-affecting spell of the Spider Goddess’ servant. Yylonia conjures up a couple of monstrous spiders -- one as big as a bear, and the other twice as big as that! Xola the drider continues powering up. No fewer than five active spells empower her now, and she will be entering combat soon with max strength.

Emeris maneuvers away from Valtrex and conjures up a 25 foot high wall of shadow, cutting off the line of sight of the snipers, the priestess, and the Envoy. One of the scouts, already injured, takes a stupid risk and jumps through the curtain of shadowy energy -- he comes out on the other side stripped of all flesh and the lifeless skeleton that remains collapses into a heap. The other scout mutters about what an idiot that guy was, and he jumps over the gap to reach the eastern side of the cross-bridge section.

The yochlol advances upon Dziga, its lashing tentacles battering him. Vatex protects him as he swallows a healing potion and feels some of his wounds close. The elf feels the holy crystal in the hilt of Diem Wing pulse with strength in the presence of the evil outsider of Gorgoth-lol’s abyssal realm and he strikes. Those watching him are barely able to follow what is happening. His blades are a blur of purple fire and silvery light. They can hear the screaming of the yochlol and magic blades tear through waxy demon flesh. The whipping tentacles batter the elf, but he does not relent despite the damage. A final blow from Diem Wing slashes through the singular eye of the demon and its waxy body folds over and disintegrates as it perishes.

Yylonia and the Envoy begin levitating to regain their view of the battlefield. The launch their most powerful spells, this time trying to confuse Early or break the mind of Emeris. Both attempts fail against the incredible willpower of the warblade and the shadowcaster. When the Envoy sees the yochlol go down, she again tries to hit the elf with a mind-wrecking spell, but to no avail. Finally her otherwise expressionless face begins to show signs of consternation.

Another Sting of Gorgoth-lol goes does with a smoldering hole blasted into its skull from Early’s lightning pistol. Cryssaegrym cuts through the other one and he moves to regroup with his friends. Emeris does the same as Valtrex lands on the cross-bridge, preparing to charge the group.

Finally Xola seems to be powered up to her satisfaction. She scuttles along the wall and reaches for Vatex with a lethal spell that will slay nearly any living creature on contact. Vatex resists most of the attack, but with the ninja, spiders, and drider now assaulting him, he must fallback. His blades slash at the drider’s legs then he springs back to join with Early. One of the spiders bites at Dziga, and the poison burns badly.

Valtrex rushes forward and hits Emeris with a flurry of claws and teeth. Most attacks are repelled by steel shadows, but he still bleeds from those that get through. Dziga vanishes into shadow to consume more healing potions as the drider advances on Emeris from the other side. The heavy warhammer of the drider smashes down and cracks his head. Early’s Raptor Strike slays the largest of the summoned spiders, but only after suffering a poisoned bite himself. Emeris blasts magic at their enemies as another dog-sized monstrous spider appears, conjured by the priestess. The fourth ninja is killed in the ensuing chaos, and the finishing blow against Valtrex is a blast of shadow power from Emeris' hand.

Yylonia throws down a field of unholy power that catches the entire group, but its dark magic affects only Early and Vatex, who are moderately hurt by it. The dark sniper on the east side fires an arrow at the unsuspecting Vatex and it takes him in the back painfully. Then the Envoy hits Vatex with a powerful blast of divine magic, throwing his mind into utter chaos. The elf cannot discern between friend and foe! After muttering incoherently to himself for a moment, the elf lunges at his shadowcaster companion, slashing at him with his swords. It appears for a moment that Emeris will be killed by his own friend, but then Vatex’s mind seems to go off on a different tangent and he looks at the Envoy with horror and tries to run away in the opposite direction.

The drider continues its fight against Emeris and Dziga. Its heavy armor and divine energy shield make it a battle of attrition, but green ichor spills across the ground as the wounds pile up. Still, the drider is powerful and is taking quite a beating. Dziga vanishes into the essence of darkness as the drider's big hammer crashes into the stone where he stood. Emeris blasts a hole of blackened flesh through its chest but still it fights on. Then, with her ranged spells mostly depleted, Yylonia casts a spell to allow her to walk on air. She rushes Early from above and her hand brushes the back of his neck, imparting a curse that drains his strength. Flanked by the powerful drider and now the priestess with his strength diminished, Early renews the ferocity of his assault. Dziga appears from the darkness to support the warblade -- killing the priestess with a series of lethal strikes.

Emeris kills the last of the conjured spiders. As the priestess' body crunched into the ground at his feet, Early recharges his Vajra maneuvers with a well-placed strike. He reverses his grip on his blade and leaps forward. With a defeaning wolf howl emitted from the Blade of the Silver Wolf as it cuts effortlessly across, a Soaring Raptor Strike kills the drider with a geyser of blood.

The Envoy, with the Black Grail still in hand, realizes the battle is effectively lost. She bottles up her rage and takes flight down the Baneheart, hoping to make her escape with the artifact.

The confused Vatex fires off a shot at the fleeing Envoy but it does no harm. The scout sees Early closing in on him, and he fires a few shots from his bow but the arrows break against the warblade’s armor. Cryssaegrym ends the scout’s life with a brutal sweep.

Emeris takes flight after the Envoy -- his magic is nearly depleted, but he fires a volley of dusk arrows which slow the servant of the Spider Goddess slightly. Emeris is the faster flier, so the Envoy turns and hovers -- firing another spell! Emeris fortunately resists and continues his pursuit.

Early jumps off the cross-bridge, free-falling down the spire and he waits until he is only a little above the bottom before he plans to activate his feather falling item since it will not work for a fall from the 1200 foot height of the cross-bridge section.

Unfortunately, the Envoy sees him coming, and upon landing at the bottom, hits him with a powerful enchantment that makes him unable to do anything other than laugh maniacally. Emeris sees his free-falling friend, and realizes that the warblade is going to splatter like a tomato dropped off the Elan city wall. He changes course sharply and grabs the falling Early. The weight of Early with all his gear and armor nearly pulls Emeris’ arms out of their sockets, but the shadowcaster hangs on and saves Early from a messy end.

The Envoy feels towards the Great Stairway leading back towards the inner vaults. It seems they may not be able to stop her... but as they lose sight of her, they hear her cry, “No, not you! Not now! We should have finished you before...!”

When they catch up on her, they see she is referring to Saggarintys, who blocks the path to the Great Stair in his human form. The Silver King looks exhausted and carries a few wounds himself. “Looters of evil, now you die!” he yells in a booming voice. As Saggarintys begins transforming into his dragon form, the Envoy makes a desperate gamble and tries to hit him with the same maniacal laughing enchantment. The dragon is unaffected, and makes short work of the Envoy. His claws tear her through her flesh, and his final attack has his jaws snap closed on her upper body. He tears her in half and she begins to dissolve into purple fire. Saggarintys picks up the Black Grail.

The Rosegate Company regroups and speaks with the Silver King. He reports that he went to check the generators in the Inner and Outer Vaults, and reveals that the Banewarrens has a big problem -- the dread osyluths have been released, either by the drow or some other faction. They have multiplied over the course of several skirmishes with the dragon and others, and now they have completely taken over the Outer Vaults. If they continue to fight and multiply, then the entire world itself would be in grave danger, to say nothing of the city of Elan.

He says that he feared the Rosegate Company had failed to acquire the Sealing Rod, so he came to try and recover it himself, despite the risks (he is, after all, apparently the only one who can repair the generators). The Rosegate Company turns over some of the evil artifacts they’d recovered, showing the Silver King their good will. They confirm that they have recovered the Sword of Lies and will take it to the Holy Order so it can be restored to its original form, the Sword of Truth. They also provide him with the diamonds they’d bought in town, which the dragon had said he’d need for the repairs.

The Sealing Rod must still be recovered, and it is more urgent now than ever -- for if the osyluths get out of the Banewarrens, the outcome will not be good at all. But the Sealing Rod will not work if the Generators are not also repaired. But that task might be impossible with the dread osyluths on the loose.

The only hope now is to get the Sealing Rod, repair the generators, and close the Banewarrens. Then, even a wish (like the Pactlords had used originally) will not be able to open the Sealed Doors. Only the Banewarrens key will be able to do that. So, to ensure this dungeon of banes cannot be reopened at all, they must use the restored Staff of Shards to destroy the key.

According to Yaeshla, the Sealing Rod should be found with the third piece of the Staff at the top of the Baneheart, where the legendary heroes defeated the Dread One in ages bygone. Saggarintys will head to the Warding Generator halfway up Tremoc Korin to check its status. The Rosegate Company will retreat back to Elan temporarily, recover, and then return to finish their mission.

The end of the quest is near!

Next time: The stage is set for the grand finale -- but a final twist in the tale will lead to an unexpected showdown... a showdown that will be the Rosegate Company’s ultimate test!

INTERLUDE: Meeting of the Keeper Overlord Council

OVERLORD SEVEN - Our Lord Archanfel acts most mysteriously... What does he do in these long periods of absence? Especially at a time such as this?

OVERLORD THREE - Your curiosity can get you in trouble, Ashtar.

OVERLORD TWO - Archanfel is aboard Demonwing. He will be returning to us soon.

OVERLORD NINE - Am I then to presume the Sea of Eden Project is nearing completion? Draconas, you will have earned a much needed rest.

OVERLORD THREE - Indeed. I will be back at Mount Bervenia before the onset of winter.

OVERLORD FIVE - So soon? Your work is nothing less than extraordinary, Draconas. To think that we will have recreated the entire Ark in just a few months!

OVERLORD ELEVEN - What of the Holy Emperor? After what happened at Mount Ordeals, how do we know that he will not destroy the new Ark?

OVERLORD SEVEN - Indeed, is it even possible for Archanfel to defeat the Holy Emperor, even if he were to battle on Demonwing itself?

OVERLORD TWO - You forget that Archanfel is also a god.

OVERLORD SEVEN - Then why did we lose the first Ark?

OVERLORD NINE - Yes, how will it be different this time?

OVERLORD TWO - You fools! The Holy Emperor had not been outside the Core of the Imperial Palace in over a century! His attack could not have been anticipated. This time, Archanfel will be ready. And remember, he need not defeat the Emperor entirely -- he need only repel him.

OVERLORD EIGHT - You see? You have too little faith in our divine leader.

OVERLORD TEN - Even so, Ashtar’s and Pashkarl’s lack of faith conceals an important question, does it not? How will Archanfel both raise the Ark and defend against the Holy Emperor at the same time? For surely we must assume he will attack again.

OVERLORD THREE - My friends, we must be united in our resolve and faith. Remember that the sole purpose of the Overlord Council is to serve Lord Archanfel.

OVERLORD TWELVE - The Holy Emperor must realize that he cannot simply defeat Archanfel, otherwise he would attack him at the Dark Reliquary, would he not?

OVERLORD EIGHT - The resulting battle would probably destroy the city. And for some reason, the Holy Emperor wants to protect the City by the Spire.

OVERLORD TEN - Perhaps we cannot truly understand the Holy Emperor anymore than we can truly understand Archanfel.

OVERLORD TWO - Rest assured Archanfel will succeed. He will be ready this time, and the Ark will be raised.

OVERLORD FOUR - Shiiva, what of the Banewarrens operation? Have you found anything?

OVERLORD TWO - We dispatched powerful agents, including Navanna Vladaam, but they were killed by the Rosegate Company.

OVERLORD THREE - Rosegate?!

OVERLORD FIVE - Were they not the ones who defeated Khyron? You were supposed to deal with them, Shiiva!

OVERLORD FOUR - How can they still be alive?

OVERLORD TWO - I simply underestimated their capability. They defeated three Keepers in battle form, including Navanna and Relegin.

OVERLORD NINE - What?!

OVERLORD ELEVEN - A-class battle forms?! They must be quite strong.

OVERLORD SEVEN - Have things gotten... a little out of hand?

OVERLORD TWO - No matter. They will be dealt with. In fact, Drusii is going to take care of them, unless one of their myriad other enemies gets them first.

OVERLORD THREE - Excellent, but how much do they know of us?

OVERLORD TWO - They know nothing yet. They appear to think they stopped the Night of Dissolution when they killed Khyron and exterminated some slack-jawed cults. They don’t even seem to know what the Night of Dissolution really is.

OVERLORD EIGHT - Hahaha.

OVERLORD FOUR - Who then will explore the Banewarrens?

OVERLORD TWO - Gragyne is still in Dezolis, yes? He could accomplish this task quickly. Plus we can control him, unlike Navanna. Duumacrothe?

OVERLORD TEN - I will dispatch him at once. He will arrive at the Dark Reliquary within the hour.

OVERLORD TEN - What of the treasures within the Banewarrens? Isn’t the Tablet of Shallamoth in there somewhere?

OVERLORD SIX - Only the Book is important.

OVERLORD FIVE - Vazferdanos! You have not spoken in--

OVERLORD SIX - Only the Book. The Book is in Jabel Shammar.

OVERLORD THREE - Indeed, we cannot be bothered with the trifling artifacts of Danar’s age. Besides, we have the transcript of the Tablet from our work on the previous Ark. So it is true, we care only about the Banewarrens insofar as it provides a way inside Jabel Shammar.

OVERLORD SEVEN - And Sokolahn believed the Banewarrens also held a passage to the Caverns of the Galchutt?

OVERLORD THREE - Yes. While in my opinion that is unlikely, that would be the only other suspected way of way of reaching the Throne, short of recovering the Signet.

OVERLORD ELEVEN - Ha! So long as the Iron Mage possesses the Signet, we will never recover it.

OVERLORD THREE - Precisely. As for Jabel Shammar, if we cannot enter through the Banewarrens...

OVERLORD TWO - There is another way--the prisoner.

OVERLORD FIVE - I thought Archanfel gave up on her?

OVERLORD TWO - I still believe she holds an important secret. We need only a way to unlock it.

OVERLORD THREE - I hope your are right. For if we do not find a way in the Banewarrens, the prisoner could very well be our last hope...

APPENDIX B: The Book of Inverted Shadows, page 751

...thus the light is nothing more than that wintry landscape of memory whose absence is all shadow and a profound awareness of the infinite spaces surrounding us on all sides. Within this space we remain suspended only with aid of strings that quiver with our hopes and our horrors, and which keep us dangling over the dark void. To seek the light is to defend such puppetry, condemning any efforts to strip us of the strings. The reason is nothing more enticing, and more vitally idiotic, than the desire to have a name -- even the name of a pathetic little puppet -- and to hold on to this name throughout the long ordeal of our lives as if it could be held onto forever. To keep those precious strings from growing frayed and tangled, if only we could keep from falling into an empty sky, we might continue to pass ourselves off under our assumed names and perpetuate our puppet’s dance through all eternity.

And so it should be that after undergoing certain ordeals -- whether ecstatic or abysmal -- we should be obliged to change our names, as we are no longer who we once were. Instead the opposite rule is applied; our names linger after anything resembling what we were, or thought we were, has disappeared entirely. There was nothing much there to begin with -- only a few questionable memories and impulses drifting about as snowflakes in a grey and endless winter. But each soon floats down and settles into a cold and nameless void.

I walked the Lands of the Dead until I reached the Sea of Eden, and then I discovered the secrets of the Tenebrous Formula, and then I was Dadga Hazareth no longer.

In the next chapter we shall discuss the Signs and Thresholds.

EPISODE 54: The Death of Helmut Itlstein; The Banewarrens, Act V: Heart of Banes II - At Last! The Lost Page of Shadow and the Sword of Lies

My struggle to free myself becomes my very shackles.

-- Dagda Hazareth
The Book of Inverted Shadows (Ormus Edition), p. 754

August 19-21, 754 YE

After eating a delicious lunch at a tavern called The Last Dragon Killer, the Rosegate Company moseys over to the square around Dalengard. People of all sorts from around the city have gathered to behold the torture and execution of Helmut Itlstein, leader of the Republican movement.

When Helmut is brought out, the overseeing priest from the Holy Order offers Helmut mercy, i.e. a swift death, if he pledge’s loyalty to the Holy Empire. Helmut says his loyalties are only to the freedom of the people of Elan, and his god, the Watcher of the Skies. The torture is not pretty. Helmut’s hands are broken and his legs hobbled, and still he stands by his principles. His body is flayed by scourging. His body pounded by huge hammers.

The group is distracted from a few other tortures when they run into none other than the assassin Vermillion! He says Helmut paid him to kill the Rosegate Group as a “Class B” group, but they were actually “Class A” so he was ripped off. Since Helmut is going to die, Vermillion proposes a professional truce, but the offer is declined. The Rosegate Company holds grudges. The assassin doesn’t seem overly concerned. He tells them Helmut, though he was basically a terrorist, was relatively moderate compared to a few folks in the Republican movement, and the the results could be good for the assassination business -- then he slips away into the crowd, saying that he’ll have to watch his back for grudge-carrying Rosegate members.

Near the end, Helmut is given another chance for swift death -- but with his body broken and slashed to ribbons, he gives his final words to the crowd, He says that this spectacle of violence and injustice proves that the Empire is tyrannical and wicked. He says that the people of Elan must decide whether they want to be ruled by a god in Tairon, or by themselves -- vox populii! Because, he says cryptically, the time will soon come where they will _have_ to act upon that choice! He is then intoxicated with Devil’s Flower and then slowly dismembered. Then his head chopped off.

Many people in the crowd thinks this goes too far. The whole thing is grotesque. Many support it in any case. Helmut was planning to attack the Holy Palace and kill priests, after all. Gotta send a message -- perhaps that is why so few people actually cheer for Helmut, and most of these are beaten or chased away by City Guardsmen. But really, the fact that anyone cheers for Helmut is strange -- how many supporters does he really have in the city?

After the execution, the party heads to Saharasahla’s library, and uses the teleporter in the storage room to reach the Inner Vaults. They then progress upwards back to Tremoc Korin. But first they try and stop by the Warding Generator and see the silver dragon -- but strangely, there is no sign of Saggarintys. He must have gone to another generator.

At the base of the Spire they find two dark elf bodies. It appears that they fell from somewhere high above. When they return to the site of the iron golem battle, Dziga dismantles a compex series of traps and locks to get into the vault with the Sword of Lies. They find 8 identical floating images of swords matching the Sword of Lies’ description. Vatex takes a gamble and grabs the first sword that strikes his intuition as being the fortuitious choice -- and is rewarded! All seven other images disappear. The Sword of Lies is now in their hands.

Now if they can turn it over to Sister Mara at the Holy Order, Emeris should be free of the quest spell binding him. Emeris examines the sword, and realizes the complex dweomers is has must be analyzed by comprehensive magic.

The group progresses upwards, exploring a new empty vaults whose Sealed Doors were left open. At nearly 600 feet up the Baneheart, the group comes to another opened Sealed Door. Beyond is a hallway that ends in a normal steel door, untrapped and unlocked. Dziga sends his shadow companion through to scout -- and he feels a tremendous psychic assault on the shadow from the other room. There is a powerful pulling sensation, then Dziga loses telepathic connection with his shadow. Yet, he can sense the shadow is still alive... however, it seems he has been sucked off this plane of existence.

Everyone but Dziga backs down the hall as the rogue opens the door, bracing for danger. There is an empty room beyond, with strange blue-ish steel plates covering the walls, and a floating star-shaped medallation floating in the air. The instant the door opens, a wave of shadowy power bursts from the amulet, flowing over Dziga and down the hall, over his companions.

Only Emeris resists the tremendous power of the shadow wave, and he finds himself alone when the wave flows past him. Where are his friends? He approaches the amulet...

Vatex, Early, and Dziga appear under a starry sky, standing on a 80-foot-across glass surface shaped like a huge star. Dziga’s shadow is there as well... and Dziga can sense his great fear. The source of this fear is ALLUZAR, the Greater Shadow Demon, who flies overhead, proclaiming his dominion over this realm. This is the extradimensional realm that exists within the Shadowstar Amulet. When the companions’ eyes fall to a glass pedestal at the center of the star-shaped surface, and the thick, ancient-looking tome there, with a symbol they’d seen on one of Emeris’ books... they realize that this is where Danar had place the Book of Inverted Shadows. They note a dead drow who obviously got sucked up into this place.

Alluzar says that Early and Vatex must die, but Dziga has the choice to serve him because he has been touched with the power of shadow. The shadow companion pleads with Dziga to take the offer, because Alluzar is too powerful to fight.

In that moment, Emeris picks up the Shadowstar Amulet which floats in the air. On the back is the word “Shadowstar”, written in the old Vigoorian language. When Emeris speaks this word, everyone within the Shadowstar realm is suddenly teleported into the room -- including Emeris’ companions, the shadow companion of Dziga, and a very angry shadow demon whose large size becomes frightfully obvious in the 30x30 room.

Alluzar offers Emeris and Dziga a chance to rule him as a god within the Shadowstar Amulet, an offer not-so-politely refused. This fiend will not give up the Book of Inverted Shadows short of dying! “Let’s do it, master!” says the shadow companion, but Dziga responds by firing from his bow. The arrows pass right through the incorporeal form as Alluzar sizes up his opponents, looking for the toughest warrior. He fires a black ray of avasculating black energy at Early, but he knocks the blast aside with the Vajra. The shadow demon flies towards Emeris with such speed he is only a black streak, and generates a field of supremely dark shadows around him and the shadowcaster.

As Alluzar tries to grab the Shadowstar Amulet away from Emeris, the shadowcaster blasts killing shadows but Alluzar is unaffected. Early charges and hits the demon with a powerful maneuver. He is joined by Dziga who cannot strike any vital points on the insubstantial fiend.

Vatex fires at the demon but it resists and flies back towards him. It fires a cackling bolt of black energy that Dziga nimbly dodges but smacks Emeris directly in the chest, burning his flesh. Vatex drops the rifle and lunges towards the demon, blades flashing. Alluzar mocks his attacks as the elf fails to strike any telling blows.

It flies back towards Emeris, who tries to paralyze it with a shadow mystery, but it fails. Terrible claws and teeth tear at the half-dragon, spilling blood everywhere, but still he fights free of the demon’s grasp and clings to the amulet. The Vajra flows through Early’s mind and he strikes again, but his blade passes through the demon who lashes out of him, scoring wicked cuts that turn the shredded flesh black and vile. Dziga and Vatex join the fray, trying to allay the demon’s wrath upon the shadowcaster, but to no avail. Its defenses are tremendous, and the fields of darkness it creates around itself make battle chaotic and rife of wide hits.

Early manages to strike the final blow with a powerful Rabid Bear Strike powered by his magic bracers. Alluzar screams as it explodes in a burst of shadow. The wounds sustained by Emeris and Early, from the claws of the demon, will not heal with normal potions. They will need to head back to town and seek healing by means of a special ritual. But first, the Book!

By speaking the command word, the Rosegate Company teleports back into the Shadowstar realm and retrieves the Book. Emeris confirms that it is a complete copy, with the legendary 751st page intact. The page contains strange philosophy and an insanely complex set of shadow symbols called the “Tenebrous Formula”. It is this knowledge that shadowcasters have sought so desperately to no avail for thousands of years. Emeris will not be able to deduce the meaning of all the symbols without more study.

When the group returns to town, the old shadowcaster is delighted that the lost page has finally been recovered. He and Emeris retreat to the study, where the old shadowcaster reveals that Dagda Hazareth discovered the Tenebrous Formula, and so visionary and advanced was his mind that no other shadowcaster since was able to deduce the Tenebrous Formula. But he says that if they can master the formula (which would likely take months of intense study), then they would be able to do three things:

1) becomes shades
2) enter Kadmiel
3) control the Box of Shadows

Emeris is all, WTF is “Kadmiel” and WTF is the “Box of Shadows”? Saharasahla reveals only one nugget about Kadmiel -- he gives him the address of a vacant lot in Oldtown that, if visited on a moonlit night, will reveal Kadmiel to him. He also alludes to the fact that the city of Elan has many strange connections to shadow-related things...

Saharasahla says with this, he will finally be able to leave the library and escape the “hounds.” What these hounds are remains a mystery, but Emeris wonders how and why they keep the old man trapped in this building.

A strange, creepy kid reading a book about dark magic in Saharasahla’s library catches their attention. He asks nosy questions about the group so Vatex and Early chase him away. Who was that dumb kid?

The next day while Emeris and Saharasahla pore over the Tenebrous Formula, Early wishes to learn about “old gods”, i.e. about the gods contemporary with seemingly forgotten powers such as Kyuss or the Silver Wolf, dealing with nature and cultures of a ‘pre-civilized’ era. His only leads within the city (not the most natural environment for those disposed to natural type things). First, there is a strange old woman living in the Warrens, supposedly a member of the “Chaos Tribe” -- a group of savages who have been known to speak of “old gods” and such. The other is a Toruk-Rul orc named MUZOG-OM, an old shaman. He lives in tent city.

Early heads outside the south wall of the city to visit Muzog, with Dziga and Vatex. As Dziga passes through the clusters of tents and makeshift shops, he thinks for a moment he spots a familiar face... Jenkins, the familiar of Keziah! But it is not him, only something that kind of looked like his fat rat body. But looking past it, he sees the wall, where the hag Keziah had brought him one night and showed him complex mathematical equations and astronomy figures.

The rogue breaks off from the other two and examines the wall. New drawing and equations have been added to it. A disturbed, starving and insane drifter sits cross legged before the wall, staring at the images, mumbling with hands in his lap. He talks about sometimes the “old lady” comes and adds to the wall. The pictures depict a crude spire with tentacle like things swirling out from beneath. A reference to the Ancients sleeping beneath the city, of course. A green circle -- the Vallis Moon -- floats above. There is what appears to be a castle floating close to it. The insane man explains that newly added are images of a dark triangle shape, “the Emissary,” and a silvery stick figure, “the Silver Elf.” These are shown around a newly drawn object that looks sort of like a house. Various new equations and charts have been added.

Muzog doesn’t have much to tell Early that is useful. He speaks of animal spirits, “old gods,” “Elder Gods,” and Toruk-Rul creation mythology. He says that since Enhasa was created by the Elder Gods (who exist “beyond the veil” which is impassable to those within the Enhasa cosmology), many lesser gods have come and gone.

Yaeshla asks if everyone will give up on her now that they have the Book and the Sword of Lies (which they decide to hang onto for now). They assure her they will not. Especially Early, whose sword Cryssaegrym has a strange affinity to the dagger, and he must restore her to unlock the next level of Cryssaegrym’s power.

It turns out that when Yaeshla was carried by the great elf wizard Maeritha Moonrise, in the age of the Dread One, she came across a warrior named TIRUS who carried Cryssaegrym. This warrior says he acquired the sword from a celestial magpie who’d stolen it from a place to which it needed to return in order to “defeat the Wormgod.”

They take the Sword of Lies to a Black Market wizard, but he refuses to be associated with it because it is too powerful, and if they keep it they will probably get everyone killed by someone more powerful. All they can deduce from magic thus far is that it protects the user arcane magic, and is particularly potent against wielders of arcane power.

That night, the group gets some magic item deliveries. Vatex in particular is delighted by his new adamantine psychokinetic scimitar, called DIEM WING. With their new gear, the groups return’s to Saharasahla’s and passes through the teleporter back to the Baneheart, having repositioned the beacon near the Sword of Lies room.

Advancing upwards, the group finds a strange opened Sealed Door containing a naked young girl in a huge glass tank that swirls with thick mist. She seems ageless and sleeping, or comatose. At the base of the tank is a long-dead humanoid, who looks like he died hugging the glass.

Higher still, at 1200 feet, they reach a cross-bridge section where the drow fought 10 gray-skinned ogres. All the ogres are dead, and they recall the two casualties splattered against the ground below. In an open Sealed Door, they find a mighty advanced kyton known as the Master of Chains. This chain devil was a loyal servant of the Dread One, and remained trapped here after his defeat. He used a bane called the Diabolus Configurator and ruled over the tribe of gray ogres.

It is a difficult battle, for the Master fights in a room filled with thousands of dangling chains over a 60 foot deep pit, the floor of which is all chains. The Master’s chain dance power allows him to control any of the chains in the room, and all of them are covered with sharp, jagged edges. Emeris is lashed by a flurry of chains and he falls back, bone exposed through his torn flesh. Dziga tries to maneuver through shadows to sneak attack the kyton, but the amazing senses of the devil keep Dziga in his sights.

Vatex and Early rush the devil across the chain bridge spanning the pit and attack. The Master of Chains takes their attacks and begins to regenerate the wounds. When Early and Vatex look upon the devil’s face, they see the faces of long-lost loved ones, or sometimes an old bitter enemy, and it distracts the fighters.

The kyton wraps himself in chains and uses his chain dance ability to collapse the chain bridge at the point closest to the entrance, pulling himself upwards as the warblade and the elf fall away. Early activates his phoenix helm and falls safely to the writhing sea of chains below, and Vatex floats with his feather falling ring, grabbing on to the falling bridge and swings to the other side of the chamber.

Early begins climbing up the dangling chains, firing his guns to support Dziga, who is swinging from chain to chain and firing his bow. Emeris flies through the hanging chains firing umbral rays. Vatex climbs to the ledge and comes under attack from the kyton. Chains swirl around him and flay him with their heavy jagged strikes. Two blows in particular nearly put the elf down, but he persists and begins climbing up the chains towards the Master. He can see Dziga becoming visible through the chains, close enough to strike. But he cannot sneak up, even with the power of shadow, given the Master of Chain’s supreme vision and hearing.

The kyton is so strong, and surely Vatex will be killed. Then the Master will move on killing them easily. Then Emeris sees one last chance -- he channels shadowstuff into the Master of Chains’ shadow, trying to weigh him down... it works! But the kyton attempts to shake off the power, calling upon his Baatorian heritage to drive back the shadow magic. Emeris yells out, a crown of shadowy energy flaring around him, fighting against the devil’s power. With a final gust of effort, he breaks the devil’s will and weighs him down so badly he is effectively paralyzed. Dziga, hasted by his boots, fires three arrows from Roguefriend, aimed perfectly and hitting the kyton directly in the chest. Vatex clings to the chains with his legs and unleashes storm of swords that cuts the devil apart. Nothing cuts worse than Diem Wing, to which is attached a Crystal of Diabloness that cuts through the devil's resistances, wounds that cannot regenerate.

The group claims the Diabolus Configurator, a large iron bracer with wicked hooks and barbs that is worn around the torso. As they treat their injuries, they can hear noise outside...

Emeris sneaks to the door and looks outside. Outside, there are drow... lots of drow, nearly a dozen, who seem to be heading downwards as if to leave the Baneheart.

The leader of the drow, who is a 12-foot tall drow woman levitating downwards, carries an evil looking black chalice. Is that... the Black Grail sought by the Pactlords? It seems the drow got it first. Now the Rosegate Company has an opportunity to try and seize it, if they want.

But do they stand a chance against an big, elite drow adventuring party, blessed by the dark elf goddess Gorgoth-lol?

Next time: Even if the Rosegate Company defeats the drow, they will soon there are far greater challenges to be faced...

Episode 53: The Banewarrens, Act VI: Portal to the Quaan -- Assault on the Black Manor

Augustar 17-19

The Rosegate Company -- Dziga, Early, Emeris, and Vatex -- decide it is time to attack the Quaan. Specifically, they wish to attack the Black Manor and acquire the second piece of the Staff of Shards. They should be able to enter the Quaan through the portal at the Chapel of St. Thessina. When they get there, they will either need to use the portal in the Tower of Charch-Pahn, the ancient beholder, or find their own way home. Beholders have a dire reputation, so they decide to acquire a scroll on which is a spell that will allow them to shift through dimensions. Dziga, with his various tricks, should be able to reliably activate the scroll if Emeris enhances his skills with magic.

Seanus talks about how he doesn’t really like being a butler and might return “home” to live close to his family. No one cares.

Early discovers that his dog has a new friend -- a cat! The relationship is quite curious -- the dog carries the cat around by the scruff, pins it down with a heavy paw and licks it playfully. The cat purrs and purrs. The cat seems clean and healthy, so it is probably not a stray. Is it... an enemy disguised as a cat? Is it... Aliaster? The little kitty shows no magic effects when Emeris scans it.

The group needs to wait for magic item deliveries from the Dreaming Apothecary, so they kill time for a day. Vatex reads about the Xerani dervish warriors from the grasslands of Tarna, in a book he’d taken from Brother Heth’s quarters. After reading many of Heth’s books that didn’t really suit his fancy, he is quite taken with the detailed observations and commentaries on the Xerani fighting style, and he decides to adapt the “dervish dance” for his own.

Early reads his book on Narshe’s ancient history, mainly the few chapters on Kaluth-Mar. It speaks of Kyuss, a man who found horrible secrets and prophecies found on strange metal plates, in the ruins of a civilization many milennia older than the primitive societies of that age (which was before the time of Danar -- nearly 22,000 years ago). Kyuss declared he would usher in an “Age of Worms” and protect those who followed him from the time of death and decay to come. Kyuss became the ruler of Kaluth-Mar, a city built on the ruins of that ancient civilization ruled by mysterious six-armed tyrants.

Emeris researches more about the Sword of Lies to make sure he doesn’t get sick from the quest spell on him. In one controversial, obscure book, he reads that the Holy Order’s ancient predecessor (pre-Holy Emperor, worshippers of the old Vigoor diety Castain) used the Sword of Truth in a time called “the Age of Blood,” when religious fanatics sought to kill all users of arcane magic The Sword is described as especially powerful against arcane enemies. For those in the know, the Holy Order and those of arcane power have frequently had, uh, violent relations through history. But the Age of Blood was practically a genocide. Fortunately almost no one remembers any of that extremely ancient history, and much of it happened while people were worshipping Castain. All that stuff basically ended with the reign of the Holy Emperor -- but the more recent conflicts are still a source of tension and embarrassment for the modern, more tolerant church. Many arcane organizations in the Empire, such as the Inverted Pyramid and the Accreditation Council of Magic Colleges, deeply distrust the church.

The next day, the party has its gear and suits up in winter clothing to handle the swampy, cold Quaan. They had to the belfry where they meet CHARLES ROSENCRANZ, a cleric of the Holy Order who seems to be “in” on the Sword of Lies operation. He guides the group to the portal, reminding them of its one-way nature, and they takes turns jumping through.

Beyond the portal is a cold, desolate swamp. The ground is like a bumpy, mossy sponge and there are fetid pools of stagnant water all around. Occasionally, pockets of hot air burst through the ground in random places. A perpetual twilight glow and misty air limits visibility to about 200 feet. Large bugs fly around, but otherwise there is no sign of anyone or anything anywhere.

Although the dagger Yaeshla cannot see, she knows approximate directions to the Black Manor from her time in the Pactlords possession -- eastward, to the “Font of the Pact”, then south. She says the Black Manor is one of the Pactlords’ main hideouts, and depending on who is there when the Rosegate Company arrives, they could be in for a brutal fight. The companions merely think, “Bring it on.”

Their journey takes them past dismal lakes of black water inhabited by huge crocodiles, massive walls of dangerous green slime that punctuate the landscape, an escaped slave of the Pactlords (who runs off into the mist, likely to die), and a dire bear fighting giant centipedes. After about 9 hours they locate the Font of the Pact, a strange foundation on a small hill that rises from the southern black lake like a little island. Yaeshla says the Font has something to do with the Pact that binds the myriad evil aberrations, dragons, magical beasts, and others together in their rock-solid alliance.

The group continues along the shoreline to the south, and after about 3 more hours circles around the body of water to the location of the Black Manor -- a single story, nondescript structure of black stone, built with the intent of accommodating creatures of all sizes.

The party observes the manor for a while, seeing no one enter or leave. They do see one silhouette fill the glow in the window on the east side of the entrance. Could they have been spotted? The group powers up -- Dziga speeds up with his haste boots, Vatex charges his rifle with a prayer to the Grim One, Early feels the Vajra wind flow through his mind and his Bracers of the Tiger Claw Scholar, and Emeris weaves a thick web of interlocking black shadows around him for protection.

The group decides to be ironic and knock on the huge double doors that serve as the only entrance. No one answers... because no one knocks on the Black Manor’s door! If you’re a Pactlord, you just walk in. If you’re not a Pactlord... you are not supposed to be there!

Opening the door, the Rosegate Company peers down a massive black hallway lined with doorways and weird painting depicting wicked monsters doing unspeakably violent things to humanoids of all sorts. Various recesses contain disturbing sculptures featuring all sorts of dark monsters -- black dragons, beholders, mind flayers, grell, xill, ogre magi, etc.

At the end of the hall in a massive board room with a long table surrounded by various strange chairs and thrones, is cleric who escaped the battle at the belfry, Trolgir! With him is the Black Manor’s guardian monster, a huge behir! At Trolgir’s command, the behir’s serpentine body surges forward, running across its 10 legs and climbing along the western wall, with lightning around its snout. Trolgir powers himself up with divine magic, in between frantic shouts to any and all comrades in the manor that they are under attack.

Vatex, Dziga, and Early fire their ballistic weapons at the advancing monster, but they do little damage. Emeris begins to prepare his magic when his suddenly hears a surge of activity in behind the door to his right. Shadow swirls around him, and blackness seeps from his eyes like smoke. As he stands ready to blast anyone that comes through... but then he hears more activity from the door to the left! A team of four club wielding ogre Pactslaves bursts from each of the rooms, and Emeris unleashes killing shadows upon the first group as the monsters close in on him, trying to crush him with their clubs. Though flanked and surrounded, Emeris weaves skilfully away from attacks and proves to be an impossible target.

The behir scuttles along the wall of the hallway, and blasts of forked burst of lightning from its mouth, catching blasting Early, Dziga, and Vatex. Early leaps at the behir as Vatex and Dziga continue firing arrows and bullets at it. The behir extends its neck suddenly and snaps at the warblade. He cannot deflect the attack and the behir grasps him in its great jaws, crunching the warblade. The behir, with its lower half still grasping the vertical surface of the wall and its upper half twisting around the grappled warblade, Dziga sees what it is trying to do as it shifts Early around in its mouth -- it’s going to swallow him!

Dziga aims carefully, eyeing the soft sports behind the monster’s curved horns. As it is so focused with trying to swallow Early, it does nothing to dodge the three arrows that soar from Roguefriend. The three arrows pierce the monster’s braincase, and as it dies it falls heavily to the floor, allowing Early to twist free of its bulk before it rolls over him in its death throes.

Emeris continues to evade the clumsy ogre attacks, unleashing umbral rays from his hands that blast smoking holes through several weakened ogres. He dashes to the side and releases a cone of freezing shadow breath drops even more ogres, and then the last one goes down when an umbral ray blasts its head apart.

Vatex sprints down the hallway into melee with Trolgir, who fights desperately and with rage and spews curses to all humanoids, but his intense indignance doesn’t make his death any less pathetic -- the elven tempest-scout-ranger makes short work of the bugbear, stabbing him through the heart with precise twin attacks activated with his magic vest. No escape this time! An ooze mephit Pactlord named VERDI briefly appears, throws a blob of corrosive slime at Vatex which the elf dodges easily, then flees the building through a window.

At that, it seems the battle is over -- but when ZSAVARI, the powerful yuan-ti abomination druid of the Pactlords (who really living in a place such as the Quaan), heard sounds of invaders, he fled outside the manor through a window in his chambers, and united with his huge crocodile companion Krau.
When the yuan-ti druid returns to the manor about a minute later, he sees Emeris standing amidst the slaughtered ogres in the main entrance. Zsavari summons a swarm of tiny poisonous vipers that fills the area around the shadowcaster, riddling him with numerous small burning bites on his legs as the small snakes slither up his pants legs. Yeccghfghccahskjhdaksj!!!!!

Emeris dashes out of the swarm and blasts it with shadow breath but it continues to surge after him, giving him more stinging bites. Early chugs back a couple of healing potions and fires his shocking pistols into swarm -- the bullets themselves are insignificant to so many tiny critters, but the coils of electricity around the discharged ammunition blasts the last of the vipers to bits.

Zsavari assaults Emeris with an array of psionic attacks, but the shadowcaster’s will is tremendously resilient. The others gather around Emeris, and continues his assault but cannot overcome his enemies’ determination for revenge.

Vatex draws power from his magic pearl and charges up his rifle for a super shot again, this time aimed at Zsavari. Despite the druid’s array of magic defenses and masterwork darkleaf armor, the shot hurts him badly. Other shots deflect harmlessly aside, so Dziga tries to beat his defenses with his dispel wand. Zsavari’s barkskin goes down and his scaly flesh softens, allowing more shots to wound him.

Krau moves forward to intercept Early, who is rushing out the door like he wants to kill everything in the world.

Krau snaps its jaw but Early evades and strikes back, cutting the croc’s top jaw clean off. A blast from Emeris’ umbral ray destroys the crocodile and Early moves in on the druid, who is still being weakened with gunfire and arrows.

Zsavari conjures up tendril like vines to come alive beneath the warblade and slow him down, but it does not good -- Early fights his way free, roaring like a beast, and hitting the druid with the Rabid Bear Strike. Warm green blood washes over him but Zsavari fights back with his wicked, magically enhanced spiky scimitar.

That vicious blade cut hideous wounds into the warblade, and his friends -- held back from the melee by the entangling plants outside the door -- fear for Early’s life. The yuan-ti and the warblade trade blows, yielding geysers of red and green.

If Early doesn’t fall back he will be killed! But the warblade, face to face with his enemy, can see the defeat in Zsavari’s eyes, and makes his final attack. If Zsavari doesn’t go down, then Early knows he will die... but Zsavari _will_ go down.

The Vajra wind blows through Early’s mind, and he leaps in the air, completing the Death From Above attack. Then he lands behind the yuan-ti, then completes an unexpected follow-up blow that pierces the monster’s heart from behind.

With victory claimed as their own, the Rosegate Company searches the Black Manor for the piece of the Staff of Shards. They find it in a disgusting slime filled room that was inhabited by the ooze mephit. When the two pieces of the staff are touched together, the ends fuse. Emeris takes Zsavari’s serpentine amulet of wisdom.

They find a few notes and letters that refer to that “Ferendis” character, the ultimate Pactlord who is supposedly coming to kill the Rosegate Company and get the Black Grail. They read of someone called QUAGGO’THOOL whose help is apparently NOT desired for the Black Grail quest. And finally they learn of someone called “SARTH”, writing to someone named “S’KYRRYT” saying he will be away training for a few days, because he needs to be ready for when Ferendis arrives.

Their quest complete, the party sets the Black Manor ablaze. With the burning black structure as their backs, they activate the scroll of plane shifting and travel back to Enhasa.

The inherent lack of exact precision with plane shifting causes the companions to appear NOT in Elan at all, but in an open grassland. It takes a few hours and some references to obscure geography lessons to eventually realize they are about 250 miles from the city, somewhere in the prairie lands between Elan and the Holy Empire’s border with Zeltennia.

They are going to miss the execution of Helmut Itlstein! It will takes days to get back to the city. Damn! Their only hope is to find a town nearby with a wizard powerful enough to have teleportation magic. In the companions’ opinion, it didn’t matter if it had to be done with a pleasant business transaction or an exercise in coercion -- they were not going to miss that execution!

The first small town, Redbrook, has nothing for them. It’s a dipshit little town inhabited by losers. The next town is Willowfield, outside of which is the farm of a retired necromancer. Well... that might work! And it all proves quite fortuitous -- NEPHRONIUS, the “Great Necromancer” [sic], offers to teleport them all to Elan in exchange for some of their magic wands. DONE!

The party stays the night in the little Willowfield Inn. The next morning Nephronius teleports them to the Adventurers Square. Supposedly Helmut’s execution is set for 2pm -- they will head to the gallows by Dalengard after lunch!

Next time: Helmut Itlstein, High Priest of the Watcher of the Skies and leader of the Republican movement – his execution will set into motion events that will change the city of Elan forever. Meanwhile, dark forces move into Tremoc Korin, ahead of the Rosegate Company, seeking the evil treasures within...

Random Factoid: In Danar’s time, the most dominant religon in the land now known as the Holy Empire of Vigoor was that worshipping the former god of life, Castain. This old “Holy Order” survived in various forms through thousands of years and was the predecessor of the modern, Holy-Emperor-worshipping Holy Order of Vigoor. When the Holy Emperor appeared 650 years ago, he killed the human emperor of Vigoor and then killed Castain. The Holy Emperor revealed to his worshippers through visions that Castain had long ago been killed and replaced by an evil entity who manipulated the Holy Order towards darkness.

It is said that from the “old Holy Order” emerged an esoteric sect that always survived the many upheavals within the church. It is said that the highest ranking members of the High Conciliator Enclave -- the group that maintains the Core of the Imperial Palace in Tairon, where the Holy Emperor resides -- are followers of this sect. It is said they know dark, forgotten secrets about the history of the Holy Order, the full history of Jabel Shammar, and even the location of the Caverns of the Ancients...

EPISODE 52: Vermillion and the Death Busters; The Trial of Helmut Itlstein

Augustar 15-17

The Rosegate Company exits the Banewarrens without encountering drow or Pactlords or Sadar agents or anyone else.

The group decides that they should attack the Quaan, but since Helmut’s trial is tomorrow, they don’t want to get stuck in another demiplane and cause problems. After they sell loot they decide to hang out in town for a day or two, wary of potential assassins sent by the Republican leader...

Vatex visits the Fateweavers headquarters to ask about his visions of the elf woman in the mirror. He speaks with a man named ORLAS who is a “mirror seer”. He says the “mirror seeing” talen is extremely rare and difficult to control. But he explains that the vision seen by the seer is always something inextricably tied to his destiny -- whether it be an object, a place, a person, or whatever. Vatex says he sees an elf woman every week or two, and Orlas perhaps his comrade ORLANA (no relation) can teach him how to learn more from his visions. He says she will contact the elf soon as she will be interested in this ability.

Emeris doesn’t want to miss the trial, but doesn’t want to become ill from the quest enchantment that binds him by getting. So he decides to go to the Imperial University with Early to look for books about the Sword of Lies. Hopefully that suffices to qualify as continuing to quest for the spell, which it seems to. Early searches various texts and searches for info about “Kaluth-Mar.” Apparently it was a great city in a ancient human kingdom that existed more than 20,000 years ago. Its ruins should lie beyond the Holy Empire’s borders, in the jungle kingdoms of Narshe. That is now lizardfolk territory. Early borrows the book “Ancient Histories of the Border Kingdoms, Volume VI: Narshe,” which has a few chapters about Kaluth-Mar. Perhaps there are references to Kyuss.

The group reconvenes and heads to the White House to celebrate their victory over Navanna and the iron golem. Emeris gets the most expensive elven prostitute, and Early gets a tough biker chick prostitute. Dziga gambles on the Mrathrach game, and recalls adventures below in the cavern with the Mrathrach Machine. Emeris gambles as well, becoming quite a spectacle as he gambles away piles of gold coins, and walks away a few thousand coins richer. Vatex keeps a careful eye on anyone who might be an assassin.

Before the group departs the White House, they learn that someone outside it waiting for them. Dziga’s shadow companion, viewing the street from the adjacent alley, reports a couple of suspicious looking cloaked characters across the street. When the company leaves the White house, they attacked by the gun-wielding Vai assassin, Vermillion, and his elite team of chaositech wielding assassins -- the Death Busters!

Dziga sees Terquad and Varimer across the street, and fires his bow at the woman with short blond hair and a scar on her face. The arrow is true but she is quicker than he expected, and draws strange, small spikey balls from her belts. Varimer deploys her quickly, and it transforms into an man sized, angular, lithe constructs with bodies made gray-black metal, its joints flaring into jagged edges. The chaositech bot charges Dziga and smashes him with its metal fist which is surrounded with a disorienting aura. Vatex steps up against the chaositech bot, hacking and slashing, his magic blades shearing through metal but still the bot fights with mindless abandon.

On the rooftop of the costume shop across from the White House, the warforged psionic warrior R17 takes aim at Early and Emeris with his wicked looking chaositech gun. It fires a line of metal shards that tears through their flesh. The late night folks in the street, like hookers and drug dealers and scoundrels and, start running away from the carnage.

Emeris channels the power of shadow and dark energy swirls swirls around his hands, and Early rushes forward with a feral growl, rushing towards Terquad, who is trying to deploy his own chaositech bot. He is not fast enough. Early dashes across the street and Cryssaegrym cuts through the man from hip to hip. Varimer sees her comrade go down and tries to fall back as other allies appear down the street from behind a wagon -- Bartoli the half-ogre barbarian, wielding a nasty huge club covered in twisting spikes and small spinning blades, and Dorath Kir, the fighter and Vermillion’s second-in-command.

Bartoli charges Early who is smacked by the wicked club, the the warblade counter attacks with a Soaring Raptor Strike. Vatex’s blades finish the chaositech bot and he moves to join the warblade. Then Vermillion appears, from his invisible sniper position, firing a well-aimed shot from his sniper rifle at the elf as he runs past the fallen chaositech bot. The elf feels eyes on his back at the last second and turns a fatal shot through the neck into a serious chest wound. He coughs up blood but he’s still ready to fight and kill.

Vatex continues into combat with Bartoli, then takes a shot from the chaositech blaster on Dorath’s left arm. The blue beam of hissing energy burns his armor into his flesh around his ribs. Damn! The elf doesn’t relent, and despite injury nimbly ducks under two of Bartoli’s swings, and drives his blades into the ogre’s guts. He expects Early to finish the ogre at that moment but then Enchilios, the elven sorcerer, appears overhead, using magical flight to attempt to dominate from the skies. He casts a quick spell with a few words of power and a greasy slick appears beneath Early. The warblade slips with a crash as he attempts to evade Bartoli’s backswing. It appears that the ogre has the advantage and stands to crush his fallen enemy’s skull, but Early quick draws his two double pistols and fires unloads their four barrels of rounds cackling with electricity into the ogre’s chest, dropping the brute dead.

Vermillion takes his rifle in one hand and a modified six-shooter dragon pistol in his other hand, and fires the street with gunfire. Vatex and Early take several gunshot rounds. His bodyguard R17 fires those shrieking rays of metal shards beside him, filling Early’s body like porcupine quills.

Dziga slashes at Varimer with Asura. The disruptive field around the dagger dissolves her flesh and she tries to fall back, firing spinning blades from the device on her arm. Dziga dives through the swarm of blades, which he escapes unharmed. Emeris rushes down the street to cut her off, blasting shadow energy from his hands which smashes her against the wall. Dziga vanishes into shadow, reappears behind Varimer and cuts her down while fending off her slender chaositech ooze sword.

Emeris takes to the sky and uses the magic of shadow to imitate a arcane fireball, blasting the rooftop containing Vermillion and R17. Although the fireball seems made only of shadowstuff, it still burns still seems to light up the street in the night.

Enchilios casts magic webs at Vatex and Early, entangling them while Dorath Kir produces his own chaositech pokeball and rolls it towards the elf. It becomes another chaositech bot, but before it can get any advantage Vatex it free, fighting past it to attack Dorath Kir, who readies his gleaming longsword. Vatex stabs Dorath quickly then jumps 10 feet back. He realizes that Early is still trapped in the webbing, and R17 has jumped from the rooftop of the costume shop and is preparing to attack, powering up with an array of psionic powers. He turns against the chaositech bot to make sure it cannot flank Early, and sets his blades to work. He takes a hit from the disorienting chaos punch, but the bot loses its arm in the process as Heth’s blade severs its elbow. The rudeus splits the bot’s head but still it fights. Vatex looks over his shoulder and sees Dorath closing in on him.

Then Dziga’s shadow is there, grasping his head and draining his strength. Dorath swings his sword, which now seems much heavier. The shadow is cut, its negative energy bleeding into the Prime, and it falls back. The delay however gives Vatex time to cut down the chaositech bot.

Dziga can’t seems to dispel the webbing to free Early more quickly, so he uses his dispel wand and fires it at the flying Enchilios. Although the sorcerer’s shield and mage armor stay up, his flight is dispelled and he falls 60 feet to the ground. The impact breaks his ribs through his flesh and he gasps for life as blood fills his lungs. Emeris drives down towards him, hands extended with columns of shadow magic erupting from his fingers. Enchilios’ body simply explodes, with bloody chunks of meat splattering all along the street.

Early fights his way out of the webbing at last, just as R17 charges him, his acid dripping spear extended towards him. Early roars and lunges foward to meet him. R17’s spear bends aside against Early’s enhanted plate mail. Powered by psionics the warforged bodyguard recovers very quickly and attacks again, but Early’s katana slashes the haft of the spear, knocking it aside. Another step forward and Early’s Elder Mountain Hammer explodes the warforged’s head.

Emeris flies up and sees Vermillion go invisible and fire a shot as he jumps across to the next rooftop. Emeris takes the hit and then sees Varis, the mysterious gentleman stranger who accompanies the Death Busters, become visible on the custume shop roof. The exquisitely dressed fellow seems to have no weapons or armor at all and seems quite out of place. Varis uses an enchantment to influence Emeris’ mind. “This is all just a big mix-up. Stop fighting, come on down here with him, and we’ll talk.”

Crazy as it should sound, Emeris seems overcome with the amazing REASONABLENESS of that request. For some reason, Varis seems like a really nice guy and maybe this whole assassination thing is a big mix up. He lands on the rooftop, arms held out in a sign of peace.

Then the magic fades, but Varis is already quick to act. He quickly produces an exquisite pistol from his cloak and fires two quick shots at Emeris. Even as Emeris stumbles back from the two hits, Dziga teleports through the shadows of the nighttime street to appear behind the gentleman stranger. He drives his Asura into Varis’ back three times and he is dead before he even realizes what happened. But instead of collapsing dead, he dissolves into silver wisps of energy. Weird.. or somethig?

Vatex faces off against Dorath, and is joined by the shadow companion of Dziga. Vatex had hunted many generic human fighters in Elan and Dorath was really no different. He slashes wound after wound into Dorath as the shadow continues draining his strength. Dorath has become so weakened he can barely stand in his heavy suit of armor. He can barely swing his sword... he can’t breathe, he tries to get his helmet off, but the elf is attacking again. He musters the last of his strength to swing his sword, but the elf blocks easily and the blade slides along the rudeus of Vazdah to the hilt. Vatex then turns the blade down and aside, and brings Heth’s sword across to cleave through the helm and into Dorath’s head. Blood sprays out from the visor.

Vermillion jumps from roof to roof, and using his assassin magic, he remains invisible and silent even as he moves with great haste. Emeris blasts many rooftops with freezing breath magic, hoping for a lucky kill. Unfortunately, the group loses the assassin and curses his cowardice. As they loot the assassin bodies, the city guard shows up and seems quite happy about the whole slaughter when the group of dead bodies is identified as Vai assassi

Although Vermillion escaped, the good news is that he probably won’t be coming after them again... at least not for awhile, and now they can probably sleep easily tonight. .

As long as Aliaster Vladaam doesn’t teleport into their house while they sleep or something crazy like that! … Well okay maybe they can’t really sleep easy, but they can still go back to their house because if Aliaster can get them, he can get them pretty much anywhere.

Back at the Rosegate House, they walk in on Seanus having intimate relations with some halfling floozy on the sofa in the living room. Turns out Seanus told her the mansion belonged to him! The girl is quite displeased when she finds out Seanus is just the butler.

That night everyone gets some items delivered from the Dreaming Apothecary. Emeris gets a new vest that makes his subtle dragon scales hard like steel, and Vatex gets some augment crystals to attach to his weapons. Dziga finally gets his custom rapier, called “Gozu Vrow”, an ancient term that has something to do with corrosion. The surface of its blade looks dark and pitted, and it looks strangely fragile, as though the first blow might break it. But it is actually forged of adamantine, and can be sheathed with acid at Dziga’s will.

The next day, the trial of Helmut Itlstein goes poorly for the leader of the Republicans. In one particularly grotesque courtroom spectacle, Emeris empties a sack containing the Death Busters’ severed heads onto the floor as he mocks Helmut’s failed attempt to have them assassinated. Although Helmut’s lawyer attempts to impeach the Rosegate Company, mainly due to Dziga having taken a plea bargain on child murder charges, it is to no avail. The judge finds Helmut guilty of treason for conspiring to commit terrorist acts against the Holy Vigoor Empire, including the attempted takeover of the Holy Palace and assassination of the Holy Order’s Archprelate on the “night of the Black Rain.”

And so Helmut is sentenced to be publicly tortured until he begs for the Holy Emperor’s mercy, at which point he will be beheaded, three days hence. Helmut gives an impassioned speech, saying that he was burdened with difficult choices because of the prophecies revealed by his god, the Watcher of the Skies. He justifies his actions saying that everything he did (including, presumably, killing children) he did for the good of his beloved city.

The group decides to go out for drinks to celebrate Helmut’s conviction, and decides to visit a known Republican hangout -- a small tavern called the Hunter’s Club. A few patrons, Republicans likely, seem to recognize the group and try to avoid their gaze. They spend a few hours in this establishment, observing the patrons react to the news of Helmut’s conviction.

There are many Republicans in there that night. They listen carefully to one particular group, consisting of an unnamed man, and two other men named Bottalogie and Ezar. They seem to know something about Republican internal politics. They refer to a man named RAKNIAN and how, whoever he is, he will be furious. They speak of how much Raknian hates Elan’s city council. And how he is more aggressive than the ever-careful, meticulous machinations of Helmut.

They also speak of another person, or maybe a group, called REBEL FOUR, and how they wonder what Rebel Four’s reaction to Helmut’s conviction will be. Who or what is Rebel Four? No one in the group, not even Vatex, has ever heard the term.

On the way home, they speak with many people and eavesdrop on others about their thoughts on the whole “Trial of the Year” thing. So say how they like the Republicans but they are disheartened that Helmut was convicted on terrorism charges, because he always spoke publicly about bringing change with non-violence. Others are very pro-Republican and furious, talking about how the whole trial was a big sham. Others, pro-Empire types, are glad to see a traitor executed for his crimes. It is surprising though, overall, to hear how Helmut was commonly thought to be a decent, respectable guy in the religious and secular community and many people did indeed believe that the trial was a big joke based on various rumors they’d heard, both true and false. Of course, many others just don’t give a damn one way or another. The justice system is corrupt, what else is new?
